Angies List: How to Keep Major Appliances Working Better, Longer

Indianapolis, Ind. (PRWEB) January 24, 2012

Most major appliances should hum along doing their heating, cooling, washing, drying and grinding for a decade or more. Know why many sputter and choke years before they should? Yep. Its usually your fault.

Our highly rated appliance repair specialists tell us it comes down to owners not doing basic cleaning as needed and/or doing things that harm the appliance, says Angie Hicks, founder of Angies List, the nations leading provider of consumer reviews on local contractors and service companies.

In most cases, consumers dont realize theyre abusing their appliances because they never read the owners manuals that accompany the machines.

????More than 50 percent of respondents to a recent Angies List member survey never clean their refrigerator condenser coils;
????Nearly 50 percent clean their ovens only once or twice a year 12 percent never do; and
????Experts say the garbage disposal is one of the most misused machines in the kitchen.

Those manuals may not be riveting reads, Hicks admits. But these machines are designed to make your life easier. Knowing how to use them properly can save you hundreds in repair bills and will reduce the stress of having one break down on you.

High-end appliances can cost thousands of dollars. Most repair calls cost less than $ 100, not counting replacement parts, Hicks said. Often, highly rated companies will forgive the service call if theyre hired to do the repair, and theyll give good advice about whether you should repair or replace your machine.

If your machine is 10 years old or older and the repair bill will be more than half the cost of a new unit, youre probably better off replacing it, she added.

Angies Appliance Dos and Donts

The refrigerator/freezer (expected lifespan: up to 15 years.)

????DO clean the condenser coils. Its an easy vacuum cleaning job for most of us and will help the fridge run efficiently. Built-ins might require a service call.
????DO check the seal. If its not tight, youre losing efficiency and not keeping food properly chilled. Close the door on a thin sheet of paper and if the paper slips, your fridge is wasting energy. Replace the seal or adjust the door latch if needed.

The dishwasher (expected lifespan: up to 15 years.)

????DO clean your dishwashers filter to remove particles and debris. Filter locations vary depending on the model, so check your owners manual if you cant find it.
????DO use the right amount and type of soap. Your owners manual will advise you. Going wrong here will affect your pump. Powdered soap tends to work better than liquid.

The garbage disposal (expected lifespan: up to 20 years.)

????DONT stuff the disposal full of food waste and then turn it on.
????DO run cold water for 10 seconds before feeding in small bits of waste, keep the water running as you feed in the waste and for 30 seconds after it disappears.
The oven (expected lifespan: up to 20 years.)

????DO check your ovens temperature gauge. An easy way to do this is to bake a cake by exactly following the directions on a basic mix. If the cake isnt perfectly baked, you may need a service call to fix the oven.
????DONT use the self-cleaner before important meals. Self-cleaning cycles require ovens to run at extremely high temperatures and often cause the ovens electronic components to fail. Most highly rated repair specialists say its better to clean up spills when they occur and to use drip pans than to rely on the self-cleaner.

Washing machine (expected lifespan: up to 15 years.)

????DONT stuff too many clothes in the machine. Overloading your unit will cause it to prematurely wear out.
????DO empty pockets and put lingerie in mesh bags before washing: Repair specialists report finding all sorts of small items in the guts of machines that would have spun happily for years. Among the troublemaking items: bra under wires, golf tees, baby spoons and coins.
????DO replace washer fill hoses every five years.

Dryers (expected lifespan: up to 15 years.)

????DO clean the vent with every load. A clogged vent will slow down the dry-time of your cycle and increase the potential for a dryer fire.
????DO have the outside vent (exhaust duct) inspected annually and cleaned yearly.

Water heaters (expected lifespan: up to 20 years.)

????DO drain a quart of water from your water heater tank every three months to remove sediment that slows down heat transfer and lowers the efficiency of your heater.

Heating and Air Conditioning Systems (expected lifespan: up to 20 years.)

????DO check air filters monthly and replace as needed.
????Have annual inspections for both furnace and air conditioners to catch small problems before they get bigger.

Kemptville Hospitals Dietary Department Receives Award

Kemptville, Ontario, Canada (PRWEB) January 21, 2012

Kemptville District Hospital is committed to a patient-focused approach to healthcare in every department, and recently the dietary unit was honored with an award for demonstrating that approach.

KDHs Food and Nutrition Services group was named Regional Unit of the Year by Morrison, the healthcare division of Compass Group Canada, the hospitals food service provider. The KDH unit was chosen from healthcare organizations all over the region, which encompasses Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba.

The Dietary Department at KDH is led by Andrea Corbett, a leader committed to quality and patient satisfaction. Corbett and her staff of 12 part- and full-time associates provide food services to all inpatients and Interim Long Term Care residents, as well as supplying the Ladies Auxiliary with healthy meals and snacks for their coffee bar, and providing catering within the hospital.

Since arriving at KDH two years ago, Corbett has undertaken a number of new initiatives: creation of a new menu, review of the interim long term care meal service, initiation of the partnership with the KDH Auxiliary for food service at the gift shop, and revision of vending machine stock to offer nutritious meals and snacks. Corbett accommodates special diets, consulting on sensitivities and allergies, and responding to patient preferences whenever possible.

Catherine VanVliet, KDHs Director of Patient Services and Integration, commended Corbett and her team for responding to rapid organizational change by showing leadership, focus on quality service, and collegiality towards patients, staff, volunteers and visitors.

This is the second award for Corbett, a registered dietician originally from Westville, Nova Scotia; after only six months in her current position she was named Morrisons Regional Salaried Associate of the Year, an honor not usually bestowed on an employee with less than a years service to the company.

Morrison District Manager Jane McPherson speaks of Corbett in glowing terms: Andrea and her team have done amazing things. For Andrea, adequate is not good enough: she envisions what could be and makes it happen. Shes exceptional and she proves it every day.

Although Corbett is a Morrison employee, she volunteers on a number of KDH committees, chairing both the Wound Care Committee and Environment Team, and participating in the inpatient quality team, long term care quality team, and budget council. Its a reciprocal relationship, she explains. If Im part of a team, Im going to be a contributing member.

For more information, please contact Jenny Read, jread(at)kdh(dot)on(dot)ca, mobile 613.285.0301. Proticas Healthy Breakfast Food

Whitehall, PA (PRWEB) January 16, 2012

Protica has released a product that they hope makes getting good nutrition first thing in the morning easier. This new product, Isometric? ready-to-drink meal replacement, was designed to help those people who often rush out of the house without even eating breakfast. Isometric is a ready-to-drink shot that contains all the nutrients typically found in a healthy, balanced meal.

For many people who want to eat healthier, simply starting off each day with a good, nutritious breakfast is a productive first step. Protica designed Isometric with the idea that the first food of the day sets a precedent for the rest of the day. If consumers start their day by eating healthy breakfast foods, Protica hopes they will find that sticking to a healthy eating plan for the remainder of the day is a lot easier. Isometrics formula is designed to help begin the day by fueling bodies with healthy foods to establish a foundation for good eating habits for the entire day.

“Some people who are trying to lose weight skip breakfast because they think that depriving their bodies of calories will speed up weight loss, and breakfast seems to be the easiest meal to skip. The problem is, when breakfast is skipped, metabolism slows down,” says Jim Duffy, Protica President. Protica understands the flaw in this breakfast skipping logic and seeks to provide a practical solution to the problem. Isometrics low calorie formula allows consumers to obtain a healthy, nutritious meal and keep their metabolism running at a fast rate.

Eating healthy breakfast foods helps to speed metabolism and burn calories efficiently. Protica wanted to introduce a product that could provide the nutrients necessary to speed metabolism in an easy to consume format. Isometrics volume is around three ounces of liquid and can be consumed in about three sips, making it easy to drink for those in a hurry in the morning. Each ready-to-drink serving contains 20 grams of protein, 20 grams of carbohydrates, two full servings of fruits and vegetables, ten grams of prebiotic dietary fiber, six grams of essential fatty acids (Omega-3 and Omega-6), and a complete spectrum of 27 vitamins and minerals. For those who are concerned about consuming too many calories first thing in the morning, each serving of Isometric contains only 240 calories.

Protica Unveils Healthy Food for Road Warriors

Whitehall, PA (PRWEB) January 13, 2012

Protica has announced today that it has developed unique products to help make it simple to eat healthy food on the road. These new products, including Isometric and Fruitasia, are designed to be healthier alternatives to typical junk food that is available while on the road like fast food restaurants and convenience stores.

Even when I am trying to be conscious about the food I eat while on the road, its easy to go into a fast food restaurant with intentions of getting a salad and get overwhelmed by the smell of French fries and hamburgers, says Jim Duffy, founder and president of Protica. Duffy wanted to develop products that help to avoid the sources of unhealthy road food temptations before you even walk out the door in the morning. It might be your routine now to stop and get a greasy breakfast sandwich, but Protica wanted there to be new, easy options that will help develop healthy new eating habits.

These new Protica products are designed to be used along with a healthy diet of fresh foods. But when you do not have time to grab healthy, fresh foods, Protica has developed several products that they believe are a good substitute. These new products include Isometric meal replacement which is designed to provide all the nutrients of a healthy meal in a compact, three-ounce shot. Fruitasia, another all natural beverage recently released by Protica, contains an entire days recommended amount of fruits and vegetables in a ready-to-drink three-ounce shot.????

Jim Duffy founded Protica and developed these products because of his busy lifestyle and need for easy to consume, nutritious snacks and beverages. When asked about his products, Jim said, Your body will thank you for including healthy foods and drinks while on the road by losing weight, maintaining lean mass, and feeling energized.

Duffy is confident that Protica products can help simplify the average person’s daily eating routines, just as they have helped his diet.
